چکیده

A mild water stress was imposed upon potted tangerine trees (Citrus sinensis Blanco. cv. Zhuju) by water withholding during early juice sac expansion stage. While fruit growth was inhibited by water stress a growth potential was built up inside the fruit, which was not expressed until rewatering. The more powerful water uptake force of the stressed fruit was caused by its more negative fruit water potential. The mechanisms involved were both passive and active in nature: more water loss from fruit to transpiring leaves during water stress and some active adaptive physiological responses of fruit to water stress. The physiological responses involved both osmotic adjustment and cell wall adjustment. The former was re ̄ected in higher soluble solute contents in both fruit juice and fruit skin (on a dry weight basis) resulting in the drop of osmotic potential (cs). The latter was re ̄ected in the cell wall loosening of fruit skin in response to water stress causing a further fruit turgor (cs) drop. These two responses further reduced fruit water potential, which promoted post-stress fruit expansion growth. # 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

The Influence of Water-Deficit Stress on Growth, Water Relations and Solute Accumulation in Wild Jujube(Ziziphus lotus)

Wild jujube, Ziziphus lotus, is a multipurpose xerophytic shrub of the Rhamnaceae family widely distributed in arid and semi-arid regions of Tunisia, where it occupies most soil types. The fruit is the edible part of the plant by local population. The reintroduction of this shrub requires the control of its multiplication in response to water shortage. This study aims to evaluate growth and wat...

Citrus in terms of soil and water salinity: A review

Citrus, one of the important fruit crops of the tropics and subtropics, is grouped as a glycophyte. The deleterious effects of salt stress lead to reduction in fruit yield and quality. The response of different citrus species to different salt(s) further brings differential responses, when fruit quality is concerned. The possible mechanisms (physical, nutritional, biochemical), which plants ada...

Water relations of wheat influenced by exogenous application of growth substances under moisture stress. Hafiz Muhammad Akram*, Abdus Sattar, Hafiz Saeed-ur-Rehman and Abbas Ali

Water potential is amongst the most useful parameters for the measurement of the degree of water stress in plants. With the objective of mitigating adverse effects of moisture stress on water potential, osmotic potential and pressure potential of wheat variety Inquilab-91, a greenhouse experiment was conducted using two moisture levels viz., normal moisture supply and moisture stress at crown r...

Effect of Calcium Chloride on Growth and Yield of Tomato under Sodium Chloride Stress

The effects of salinity and supplied calcium chloride on growth and leaf ions concentration of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.) were investigated in Gorgan, Iran. A factorial experiment was conducted based on RCBD with four NaCl levels (0, 50, 100, and 150 mM) and four CaCl2 levels (0, 100, 200 and 300 mg L-1). Data of growth, yield and leaf’s Ca, K, and Na content were subjected to analyze ...
